Why Cancún?

Cancún gets a bad rap from people who only see the Hotel Zone. But beyond the resort strip lies the Yucatán Peninsula — spectacular cenotes, Chichén Itzá, Isla Mujeres, and Tulum within easy reach. Use Cancún as a base and you'll love it.

What to do in Cancún

Cenote Dos Ojos snorkeling
Chichén Itzá at sunrise (before crowds)
Isla Mujeres cart rental
Party on the Hotel Zone strip
Holbox Island (no cars, paradise)

Cancún FAQs

Is Cancún just for spring break?

The Hotel Zone has that energy, but Downtown Cancún is local and cheap. The real draw is using it as a base for the Riviera Maya and Yucatán Peninsula.

How far is Tulum from Cancún?

2 hours by ADO bus ($8) or colectivo. Many travelers base in Cancún and day trip south, or move to Tulum for the last few days.

What is a cenote?

Natural freshwater sinkholes unique to the Yucatán Peninsula — formed when limestone collapses to reveal underground rivers. Swimming in them is otherworldly.
