Is Tokyo Really That Expensive?
Tokyo has a reputation for being expensive — and parts of it are. But with a little knowledge, 10 days in Tokyo is genuinely affordable. The trick: Japan's convenience stores (konbini) are the best cheap food in the world, and hostels have improved dramatically in the last five years.

10-Day Tokyo Itinerary
Days 1–2: Asakusa + Ueno
Land at Narita, get a Suica IC card (¥1,000 deposit, load it up — works on all trains). Head to Asakusa: Senso-ji Temple at dawn before crowds, Nakamise Shopping Street for cheap street food. Evening: wander to Akihabara for the full sensory overload.
Days 3–4: Shibuya + Harajuku
Shibuya Crossing at night from the Starbucks above — free. Takeshita Street in Harajuku — absurd and wonderful. Meiji Shrine for calm. Eat ramen at Ichiran (solo dining booths, legitimately great ramen, ~¥1,200).
Days 5–6: Shinjuku
Golden Gai for tiny bars with character (each holds 8 people max). Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) for yakitori and local atmosphere. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building observation deck — free city view from 202 meters.
Day 7: Day Trip to Nikko or Kamakura
Kamakura (1hr by train) has the giant Buddha and oceanside temples. Nikko (2hrs) has Japan's most ornate shrine complex. Both under ¥5,000 return.
Days 8–10: Neighborhoods + eating
Yanaka for old Tokyo feel — shotengai (shopping street), cats, traditional crafts. Tsukiji Outer Market for the best sushi breakfast of your life ($10–15). teamLab Borderless ($30) if you have one experience splurge.
Eating Cheap in Tokyo
- 7-Eleven / Lawson / FamilyMart — onigiri (¥130), sandwiches, hot food, all excellent. This is not a downgrade.
- Yoshinoya / Sukiya — beef bowl chains, full meal for ¥500
- Standing sushi bars near Tsukiji — ¥1,000–1,500 for incredible quality
- Ramen shops — ¥900–1,300 for a full meal
