How to Pick a Bangkok Hostel
Bangkok has hundreds of hostels and the quality range is massive. The key question: what do you want to be near? The old town and temples (Khao San area), the river and markets (Bang Rak), or the modern city (Silom/Sukhumvit)? Each area has a completely different vibe.
Best Hostels by Area
Khao San Road Area — Best for first-timers and party crowd
Lub D Silom — consistently the best-run hostel chain in Southeast Asia. Huge common areas, rooftop pool, great social events. Dorms from ฿450 (~$12). Their Khao San location is slightly smaller but well-located.
NapPark Hostel @ Khao San — creative bunk pod design, private reading lights and curtains, good AC. Dorms from ฿380 (~$10). More sleep-focused than party.
Niras Bankoc — boutique hostel in a converted shophouse. Small, personal, rooftop breakfast. Dorms from ฿650 (~$18). Worth the extra if you want quality.
Chinatown (Yaowarat) — Local, foodie, underrated
Phranakorn Nornlen Hotel — artsy shophouse hotel-hostel hybrid, in the heart of old Bangkok. Rooftop garden, incredible location. Dorms from ฿500 (~$14).
Staying in Chinatown means you're 15 minutes from the temples and 10 minutes from Chinatown's legendary street food. Best food location in the city.
Silom / Bang Rak — For travelers who want the real Bangkok
Lub D Bangkok Silom — the flagship. Pool, co-working, multiple bar areas, genuinely excellent events programme. This is where you'll actually meet people and have adventures. Dorms from ฿500 (~$14).
Saphaipae Hostel — converted warehouse near Chao Phraya river, stunning design, rooftop with river views. Dorms from ฿600 (~$16).
What to Look For (and Avoid)
Look for: strong AC (Bangkok is brutal in heat), lockers big enough for a 40L bag, common areas that actually get used, near a BTS/MRT station.
Avoid: hostels on Khao San Road itself (overpriced for quality), anything without reviews from the past 6 months, hostels that don't show a pool or common area photo (they don't have one).

Booking Tips
- Book the first 2 nights in advance, then assess in person — Bangkok has so many good options
- Check in after 3pm — rooms won't be ready before then
- Hostelworld and Booking.com have the same prices — Hostelworld has better hostel-specific reviews
- Avoid dorm rooms that only show exterior photos — that's hiding something
